I was almost shot today. I saw the perimeter of the south wall and began running. I could not wait to get out of central Florida. Suddenly dirt and ash started pelting me in the face and I realized bullets were perforating the ground at my feet. I ducked behind the only thing there was, a fire hydrant. It didn’t offer much cover but it was better than standing out in the open.
I didn’t know what else to do so I took off my shirt and started waving it above my head. It wasn’t a white flag (in fact it was blue) but I didn’t much care at that point. The gunfire stopped and a minute later I heard a male voice talking to me over a loudspeaker.
The man had me slowly approach the wall. When I was about fifty yards away he had me stop and strip. I tried to leave my underwear on but he said it had to be the full monty. Who needs dignity, anyway?
After they got done inspecting me for bites or infection, I was allowed to put my clothes back on and approach the wall. There was an entire army regiment on the other side. The man on the loudspeaker was Col. Holton. They were tasked with maintaining the south wall and insuring no zombies got past it.
I told him about my son and my destination of Fort Patrick. He didn’t have any info on survivors but he did point me towards Fort Patrick. He also gave me some good information with regard to killing zombies. Apparently the trick is to destroy the brainstem and cerebellum which are located deep within the base of the skull.
That is why I have had to pretty much destroy the whole head in order to put one of those bastards down. You can’t just destroy any part of the brain; you have to get a specific part. Col. Holton recommended using hollow tip rounds and aiming for the lower back of the head. If you don’t have guns, a bladed or piercing weapon can be used. Instead of going for the back of the head, however, Col. Holton said it is easier to penetrate the soft area between the jaw bone and throat.

Dear editor: I was almost shot TODAY.
Doh! I'll have to yell at my wife... I mean my editor about missing that one.
This entry was AMAZING!! I need to know what happens...is his son ok?!?! Will the devastation never end?!?! So good :)
I'm under the assumption that the military gave him some supplies to continue on to Fort Patrick? Did he ever get on the other side of the wall? That was one thing that wasn't clear to me.
I like that the military is on edge and not taking any chances. That's one thing I hated about 28 weeks later, the director made the military look like idiots and the story set them up to fail.
All in all, another great entry Simon!
L Kel - No, the devestation will not end! :)
Paul - Sorry if it is not clear, but there are two walls sandwhiching central Florida. Our narrator took a boat around the north wall and this entry concludes him passing over the south wall. So he did make it to the other side of the wall.
Also the military was very generous to him... all the MREs he could carry. Yummy!
