Week 11: Caleb’s Story

Caleb had been in that room since the bus accident and was in dire need of food. I gave him whatever I had on me and tried to console the poor kid. Water service had continued in the hotel but Caleb’s only food source had been a few stale buns and a bunch of discarded fries he had managed to scavenge out of the fast food joint’s trash.

It was while he was rummaging for food that the zombies showed up and chased him back to his room. He had been stuck in the room ever since. Eventually he ran out of fries and stale buns so he resorted to eating paper he found throughout the hotel room; toilet tissue, stationary, paper towels, even pages from the Gideon’s Bible.

Caleb’s dad had been one of the chaperones on the band trip and he was sure that his dad would return to the hotel to find him. In fact when I showed up he thought I was his father, much in the same way I thought he was Matthew.

I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the poor kid. The only thing I did know was that the hotel room was not a safe place for him. I finally decided to take Caleb with me and leave him at the first safe house I came to. I couldn’t carry the boy around with me forever. It was just too dangerous.

Caleb on the other hand did not want to leave the hotel. He was convinced his father would show up looking for him. He finally agreed to go when I suggested we leave a note so his dad could find us. We painted our message on the hotel room’s door; “Caleb Grainger is alive and heading to a safe house in West Palm Beach”.

That evening we loaded up in a Jeep Wagoneer I acquired and made our way to West Palm Beach. As we drove south I couldn’t help but wonder if Matthew was also stuck somewhere with a zombie horde outside his door… sitting there, starving, certain that his dad would come for him soon.

Definately a very good entry, on par with the rest of the story, awesome!

My only question was what caused the bus to hit the culvert? I would have thought this would be something that Matthew's Dad would have asked Caleb and if Matthew was ok? Maybe I just missed it, or Caleb is going to tell him on the ride?

This story is fantastic! Keep it up!

P.S. - THANK YOU for dumping that double barreled and picking up a pump action shotgun! That would have been one of the first things on my "to do" list in his spot! lol

Hey Paul,

You will actually find out about the bus tomorrow. Our narrator didn't want to question Caleb about it right away as the poor boy was still traumatized from his ordeal. He'll get the info from Caleb as they are riding to West Palm Beach.

P.S. - Hahaha, thought you would like the pump action shot gun. I know our narrator does.
