Week 37: Entourage

We are back on I-20 and making our way west toward our cutoff to I-75. And by “we” I mean Brenda, Matthew, Harvey, and Edith. Not to mention two chickens and a goat.

I had determined that staying on the farm was a death sentence and bringing Edith and Harvey with us just meant more mouths to feed. But it seems that we have a democratic system of voting, and between Brenda and Matthew, I was overruled. They didn’t want to stay on the farm, but Brenda and Matthew thought we should at least offer to let the Cunningham’s tag along.

Edith accepted, of course. What other choice did they have? Edith immediately began hooting and cheering and thanking us. Telling us we wouldn’t be sorry. She started hugging me and listing all the ways she and Harvey would be helpful.

To be honest I didn’t much care because I was still pretty ticked about the thought of dragging them along.

But then I looked over at Harvey. He was sitting there silent, with the usual blank look on his face. As I stared I saw tears begin to stream down his cheeks. Harvey’s grandmother may think he is stupid, but I guarantee there is more going on in that boy’s head than he lets on. Harvey understood the gravity of the situation. He knew their lives had just been saved.

That’s when I felt bad about not wanting to take them along with us.
