Well I was correct… I did go east. So far east in fact that I managed to run the boat right up onto shore. I was getting low on gas anyway, so I ditched the boat and continued on foot.
The coast here is desolate and dark. Now that there is no electricity it is amazing how dark it gets at night. Thank God I was able to get more flashlights and batteries from the convenience store.
On the positive side I haven’t seen a zombie since I made landfall. On the negative side I can’t find any buildings to spend the night in. I did come across an old billboard. Whatever ad it used to sport is gone, but it still has a catwalk just wide enough for me to sleep on. At least it is high and out of reach of any zombies. Just hope I don’t roll off.

Didn't he learn anything about sleeping in high places from sleeping on the roof? Only now there are no other buildings around or supplies to fall back on.
Awesome work!
Yeah, you would think he would learn. I guess it is sort of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.
I don't think he did anything wrong, sleeping on a roof. If there's a better option with roving, quiet, land-based predators on the prowl, I can't think of it.
So the other day you sez: "the zombies are slow but not necessarily uncoordinated. It really depends on what damage has been done to their bodies. A person, who turns strictly from infection and was otherwise healthy and uninjured, will have the same coordination and abilities once they turn to a zombie. It is just the higher brain functions that suffer. The ones who suffer trauma to their bodies are the ones that will function in a limited manner depending on what injuries they may have."... can zombies climb ladders? (assuming he can't remove it from the standard billoard frame)
The debilitating factor I am putting on these zombies (in addition to the cold sensitivity) is intelligence. They are basically like dumb animals (emphasis on dumb, I know some animals are very smart). All instinct and not much else. So I ask myself could an animal do this. With regards to climbing into the bed of a truck or up a ladder my guess is "yes" they could, although the ladder may take more time for them to figure out.
With regards to our narrators safety, the billboards I have seen have ladders that don't start until they are about 10 feet off the ground, so you either need a portable ladder or an aerial lift (or a makeshift grapple hook) just to reach the first rung.
Hope that makes sense.
