Crossing the wasteland of central Florida is a lot quicker when you’re driving. I managed to snag a van and stocked it with canned food, water and gas. There are a new set of difficulties that come with traversing the wasteland by vehicle, however.
First of all there is the dust and ash that coats everything here. Sometimes it comes in sheets and waves like some grey sandstorm. It obscures the roads and it covers your windshield. I have already run out of windshield wiper fluid and had to refill the tank twice with my precious drinking water. Navigation is almost impossible and you can forget about traveling faster than 20 mph.
Secondly there are the zombie packs that roam the place like lions on the savannah. They seem to be ravenous and chase after anything that moves. I have never seen the zombies attack anything but humans until now. As I was driving up the road a dog dashed out in front of me followed by about four zombies who were chasing it. I plowed through them to try and give the dog a fighting chance but I don’t know if it will do any good.
Oh, and it is pretty hot here so the zombies are running at full sprint. Pair that with the fact that I can’t drive very fast and you get some pretty intense car chases.
These are minor inconveniences though. Just annoyances to slow me down from reaching Matthew but I will reach him. And when I do I am going to pick him up in the biggest bear hug of his life. I don’t care is that sounds lame or corny. It’s the truth. I just hope I can bring myself to let him go eventually.
