To find Matthew I think our best bet is to retrace Mike’s path from Santee west to where he found Brenda. From there we will continue west and hopefully come across some clue as to where Matthew is.
So to start with we will leave Summerton southward and cross the bridge one last time in order to reach Santee and then head west. The zombies have probably cleared out by now and the wreckage of Mike’s rig and the Dead Dozer was mainly contained in the northbound lanes so the southbound lanes should be clear. If it looks too dangerous we can always turn back.
Plus I am eager to investigate what is in the cab of Mike’s rig. Maybe there are some clues as to Matthew’s condition before he escaped… how Mike treated him… what their relationship was like.
…
We made it across the bridge without a hitch and I did get a peek into Mike’s rig. The sleeping quarters had been divided into two makeshift pallets, one smaller than the other. It looked like they had spent many nights sleeping in the rig. Matthew had a stack of comic books on his side and a flashlight to read them by.
There were two pictures taped up on the ceiling of the cab. One on Caleb’s side was a picture of me. I didn’t even know Matthew carried it around with him. Like a reflex, when I saw the picture I picked up the mouth piece around my neck and touched it to my cheek.
On Mike’s side there was a photo of Caleb. I am truly sorry about what happened to Caleb and I understand Mike’s anger. I just can’t understand the way he has chosen to deal with it.
