Somehow we all managed to get out of the house. I had Matthew with me and we found an exit through the cellar. Brenda had taken the high road and escaped onto the roof from a second story window.
Edith and Harvey fought their way straight out the front door. It was amazing. Harvey had an axe in one hand and machete in the other. He plowed a path through the zombies while behind him Edith took aim with her hunting rifle.
Once we were all out it was a scramble to regroup and gain access to the safety of our semi. Matthew and I were the first to make it. We started the engine and got prepared to roll just as Brenda arrived. We drove the rig around front to pick up Edith and Harvey.
As I turned the corner of the house, the headlights revealed an awful sight. A pack of zombies were on Edith, tearing her to pieces while Harvey was doing his best to fight them off of her. All the while Edith was screaming, “Go Harvey, go! Go with them. Don’t be stupid boy! Get out of here while you can!”
For a second I thought I should just leave both of them. But I couldn’t. I put the rig in park and jumped out. I grabbed Harvey by the waist and started dragging him back to the rig.
He didn’t fight much. I knew Edith was lost and so did he. I got him back to the truck and we started rolling. Harvey just kept mumbling, “I knew this was going to happen. I knew this was going to happen.”
I think he really did.
