Week 40: Field of Zeds

It has been getting colder lately. We have been driving non-stop so we almost didn’t notice. This morning, however we noticed. Our tanks were just about empty and so was our food supply. We had no choice but to stop and scavenge.

We made it to a small town with a fire station. It was the best luck we had in a long time. The tanks on the fire trucks still had diesel in them and we were able to siphon out quite a bit. It was enough to fill our rig and about six red gas containers.

We didn’t have much luck finding food in the town, though, so we moved on until we found a farm house a ways down the road. There wasn’t much, just a few canned goods, some planted crops that hadn’t fully rotted yet, and a half empty sack of rice. It would have to do, though.

As we were packing up and preparing to leave I heard Brenda scream from the other side of the farm house. As I was about to run to her aid, Harvey looked up from what he was doing and told me plainly “They are here.”

I dashed off to find Brenda and as I rounded the corner of the farm house I saw that Harvey was right. Across the fields along the tree line they were emerging. Zombies, just a few at first, but the steady flow increased until the fields were teeming with them. Hundreds if not thousands came shambling in our direction.

And thank God it was cold. They could only move at a walking pace. It gave us just enough time to finish loading up and get moving again. I just hope this is the front of the wave and that the horde has not already surrounded us.
