Week 43: Big Trouble

Just as we reached Mobile Bay the zombies started closing in on us. Every street we tried to head down would eventually be blocked by an advancing zombie wall.

Our goal was to breakthrough, east or west. It didn’t matter I just didn’t want to continue south and get trapped at the coast. Unfortunately we had no choice.

We had made it to I-10 but the zombies were surrounding us. We were being forced onto the bridge over Mobile Bay when Brenda saw it; a battleship docked at the edge of the port. The USS Alabama. If memory serves me it had been a tourist attraction before the infection. Now it would be our sanctuary.

We had to abandon the car and run on foot. No easy task considering Harvey was still unconscious. I wasn’t about to leave him again, though. We cut his restraints and draped his arms over our shoulders, Harold on one side and me on the other. Brenda and Matthew grabbed whatever supplies we had from the car and we sprinted as fast as we could for the ship.

Luckily the temperature had dropped a bit and the meat puppets weren’t running on full steam. Otherwise we would have never made it.

There was a catwalk leading up to the ship from the pier. Just at the end, a section had been removed from the walkway and a makeshift drawbridge had been erected on the other side. The battleship was obviously already occupied.

We began screaming at the top of our lungs and eventually people showed up. At first they just stared at us dumbfounded not knowing what to do. Finally the guy in charge (Tom) showed up and gave the order to lower the bridge. At that point the zombies had already begun to climb the catwalk. As the drawbridge was pulled up behind us the zombies began plunging into the water like lemming walking off a cliff.

Thank God Brenda had bandaged Harvey up and we had undone his restraints. They would have never let us on if they had seen his bite marks. Even now we are all sitting in a quarantine room waiting to be cleared.

At least now if they find Harvey’s wounds we will have a chance to explain things to them. Plus they will already know that he had not turned in spite of their quarantine time period.
