Week 4: The Worst Day of my Life

We had decided if it came to a point that my wife turned, I would kill her. We had seen what the zombies were and they had no humanity. They wandered mindlessly, slobbering, defecating on themselves and attacking anything that was alive. My wife did not want to be like that. She made me promise to do it. Of course I did not want to see her roaming about as a mindless meat puppet either, so I told her I would.

This was the day that she turned.

I will not go into the details of how I did it but I will record how it came about. Towards the end, electricity was spotty so I had hooked up a battery operated CD player and some headphones for her to listen to music. She was listening to a CD and was resting on our bed when it happened. The idea was that I would finish things while she was still in the “death-like” state. Unfortunately it was hard to gauge exactly when that was going to happen. I had fallen asleep on a pallet at the foot of the bed when it did.

Luckily the headphone jack got pulled out of the CD player when she got up and it started blaring Lou Reed’s “A Perfect Day” (her favorite song) which woke me up. Apparently she had put the song on repeat and it just kept playing over and over again while I struggled to subdue her. God I wish I could get that fucking song out of my head.

Eventually I fulfilled her wishes. This is the last I will ever write about it and I will not rule out someday ripping this portion from my journal and burning it.

In case I didn't mention it, my wife’s name was Maria Taylor.

Very well done. You give the character an almost "live" human feeling by not having him describe how he deals with his "turned" wife. Some would like to hear about the action I'm assured, but who would want to describe the loss of their loved ones let alone with recite how they extinguished (well... "post"-extinguished since she was alraady dead lol) them with their own hands. That's what made me a fan. Keep it up good sir.

Thanks a lot. I tried to put myself in that situation and I sure as hell would not want to describe it.
