Week 6: The Great Escape

I finally came up with a plan. Unfortunately its execution resulted in tragedy.

The temperature had continued to drop and the zombies became much more interested in warmth than a possible meal. I decided to take advantage of that fact.

Across the street from me was an old office building. I began launching my makeshift torches at it in an attempt to catch it on fire. I figured if there was a big enough source of heat, it would draw the zombies away and then I could make it to my scooter and take off.

Catching a brick and mortar building on fire with some piddly ass torches is not easy. I spent about six hours trying and by the end I was almost out of torch materials. The winning fire starter was made out of a teddy bear tied to power strip and dipped in vegetable oil. I managed to get it into one of the bottom floor windows.

About five minutes later flames began to take hold of the first floor. The zombies slowly shuffled toward the heat. After ten minutes the whole bottom half of the building was engulfed in flames and zombies had surrounded the bonfire. My side of the street was abandoned.

As I was about to climb down off of my roof I heard screaming from the office building. I turned to see four or five people, living people, bunched up and hanging out an open window on the top. Smoke was pouring out from behind them. Below the zombies began to mosh about in anticipation of fresh meat.

The building had not been abandoned as I thought. I could not figure out any way to save them but I swear I tried. As the first of the survivors jumped to the horde below I turned to my scooter and rode away. I could not bear witness to the catastrophe I had caused. God please forgive me for what I have done.

*Shudder*
Nice "twist" to your protagonist's ingenuity

Thank you. I try to keep it, uh... shall we say interesting? Yeah, interesting. :)

Holy Crap! Choice and consequences. The trauma he must be going through in knowing what he did, even though no intentional. Hopefully he doesn't hesitate due to this decision.

We'll see. ;)

I think Week 6: The Great Escape has been the most emotional for me so far. I feel for the people in the office building. They are basically doomed as the main character drives away. Really good writing Simon. The story is keeping me hooked. You have an awesome imagination. Sandy A.

Thanks, I thought it was one of my better posts as well. I struggled awhile trying to find a soundtrack song for it. I am not 100% sure about the one I attached, but I can see it playing as he rides off into the sunset with the burning building behind him.
